HOW CBT WORKS
CBT is a highly effective, skills based approach, that looks at how our thoughts and behaviours maintain stress, anxiety and trauma. It works by:
1. Identifying the stuck points - what automatic thoughts do you have that lead you to feel stressed and anxious e.g. self critical thoughts, catastrophic thoughts, rumination.
2. Establish the core beliefs - what beliefs and rules did you develop through experience to keep you safe that may now be out of date and would benefit from being restructured.
3. Restructuring - we update the automatic thoughts, beliefs, rules and responses with practical tools to reduce anxiety, trauma and stress that are sustainable and in line with your values.

Frequently Asked Questions about CBT Therapy
1. What is CBT therapy? Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours influence one another. CBT focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns and developing practical strategies that can help you feel less overwhelmed, more confident and better able to cope with life’s challenges.
2. How can CBT help with anxiety? CBT is one of the most effective therapies for anxiety. It can help you recognise patterns such as overthinking, excessive worry, self-criticism and avoidance, while developing healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts and situations. Many clients find CBT helps them feel calmer, more balanced and more in control of their anxiety.
3. Can CBT help with perfectionism? Yes. Perfectionism often involves setting unrealistically high standards, being highly self-critical and feeling that your worth depends on your achievements. CBT can help you understand these patterns, challenge unhelpful beliefs and develop a healthier relationship with success, productivity and self-worth.
4. Is CBT effective for high-functioning anxiety? Many high-achieving adults experience what is often described as high-functioning anxiety. You may appear successful, organised and capable on the outside while feeling constantly under pressure internally. CBT can help you understand the beliefs and behaviours that maintain anxiety and support you in creating a more sustainable way of living and working.
5. Can CBT help with burnout? Yes. CBT can help you identify the thoughts, expectations and behavioural patterns that contribute to burnout, such as perfectionism, over-responsibility, people-pleasing or difficulty setting boundaries. Therapy can support you in developing healthier ways of managing stress while protecting your wellbeing.
6. Can CBT help if I have experienced trauma? CBT can be helpful for many people who have experienced trauma, particularly when trauma contributes to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or difficulties in relationships. As a trauma-informed therapist trained in both CBT and EMDR, I can help determine which approach may be most appropriate for your needs and goals.
7. What happens during a CBT therapy session? CBT sessions are collaborative and structured. Together we will explore the difficulties you are experiencing, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck and develop practical strategies to support change. Sessions provide a space to reflect, learn new skills and work towards meaningful goals at a pace that feels manageable for you.
8. How many CBT sessions will I need? The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, the difficulties you are facing and how long these challenges have been present. Some clients find that a relatively short course of therapy is sufficient, while others choose longer-term support, particularly when working through more complex or long-standing difficulties.
9. Do you offer online CBT therapy? Yes. I offer online CBT therapy for adults across the UK, allowing you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many difficulties, including anxiety, depression, stress and burnout.
