EMDR Intensive Therapy in Somerset & Online Across the UK

EMDR Intensives: Accelerated Therapy for Busy Professionals & High Achieving Adults

You push through. You adapt. You perform.

But some experiences don’t stay solved, no matter how capable you are.

Old stress, attachment wounds and unresolved trauma can continue to show up as:

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion

  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected

  • Anxiety beneath the surface, even when things seem fine

  • A constant sense of being “on alert”

  • Difficulty switching off or truly relaxing

  • Struggling to trust others or let your guard down

  • Feeling stuck in patterns of perfectionism, over-responsibility or self-pressure

You may have spent years functioning well on the outside while privately carrying far more than anyone realises.

If you’re looking for:

  • Deep and meaningful healing

  • Focused support around specific experiences

  • An alternative to weekly therapy that feels too slow or fragmented

  • A therapy approach that fits around a busy professional life

then an EMDR Intensive may be a good fit.

Designed for people who are ready to work deeply and efficiently, EMDR Intensives offer dedicated time to focus on healing without the interruptions that can come with weekly sessions.

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR Intensive is a longer, focused therapy session designed to help you make meaningful progress in a shorter period of time.

Rather than working in weekly 50-minute sessions, an intensive provides dedicated space to focus on specific memories, experiences or patterns that continue to affect your wellbeing.

This format can be particularly beneficial if:

  • You have a specific traumatic memory you would like to address

  • You are struggling with anxiety linked to past experiences

  • You are feeling stuck in weekly therapy

  • You have limited availability due to work or other commitments

  • You want to focus on recovery without long gaps between sessions

Why Hyper Independent and High Achieving Adults Choose an EMDR Intensive over Weekly Therapy

Many of the clients I work with are balancing demanding careers, family responsibilities and the pressure of being the person others rely on. While weekly therapy works well for many people, others find that a more focused and contained approach better suits their lives and goals.

For some weekly trauma therapy can feel unexpectedly disruptive. In a traditional 50-minute session, you begin to open up difficult experiences and just as things start to unfold, the session ends. You return to your week carrying what was stirred up, trying to focus while holding tender material in the background.

Over time, this stop-start rhythm can feel draining. It’s not that you don’t want healing. It’s that repeatedly reopening painful memories while managing a full life can be emotionally exhausting.

An EMDR intensive offers a different approach.

Rather than dipping into trauma week after week, an EMDR intensive provides protected, extended time to work through experiences more fully. There is space to settle, process and integrate without rushing or packing everything away too soon.

For many adults seeking trauma therapy in Somerset or online across the UK, this focused format feels more contained, efficient and aligned with their lives. You step out intentionally, do meaningful work, and return with greater clarity and steadiness.

An intensive isn’t about doing more therapy.

It’s about doing therapy differently in a way that respects both your emotional capacity and your real-world commitments.

What are the Benefits of an EMDR Intensive?

  • Dedicated Time for Healing: Instead of dipping in and out of trauma processing over months, you have a dedicated, protected space to focus entirely on the work.

  • Less Stop Start Processing: By consolidating the processing time, you bypass the emotional hangover of opening and closing your "trauma boxes" week after week.

  • More Opportunity for Integration: Because the processing is done in a concentrated block, you get to step away afterward and actually integrate the changes into your life, without the pressure of therapy constantly sitting in the background.

  • Maintaining Momentum: When therapy feels stuck, an extended format can break through protective barriers much more gently and naturally than repeated starts and stops.

Who Are EMDR Intensives Suitable For?

EMDR Intensives are often a good fit for adults who:

  • Appear successful and capable on the outside but feel overwhelmed underneath

  • Struggle with anxiety, perfectionism or burnout

  • Find it difficult to switch off or relax

  • Have experienced trauma, attachment wounds or emotionally difficult life events

  • Tend to be highly independent and find it hard to ask for support

  • Prefer a focused, structured approach to therapy

  • Have limited time available for weekly sessions

Many clients tell me they have spent years coping, adapting and pushing through. An intensive offers the opportunity to pause and focus on the deeper issues that may be keeping them stuck.

Choosing an intensive format isn't about being in a crisis in fact, it’s the exact opposite. It’s about readiness and stability

If you prefer face-to-face therapy, EMDR Intensives are available from my peaceful therapy room in Wellington, Somerset.

Many clients value having dedicated time away from the demands of everyday life, allowing them to focus fully on their healing in a calm and supportive environment.

My practice is easily accessible from Taunton, Tiverton, Exeter and the surrounding areas, and some clients choose to combine their intensive with time away in the South West to create space for reflection and recovery.

Both online and in-person EMDR Intensives can be highly effective.
The best option is usually the one that feels most comfortable, practical and supportive for you. During our initial consultation, we can discuss your preferences and decide which approach is likely to suit your needs best.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Intensives

1. What is an EMDR Intensive? An EMDR Intensive is a focused, extended therapy format designed to help you make meaningful progress in a shorter period of time. Rather than attending weekly 50-minute sessions, you have dedicated time to work on specific memories, experiences or patterns that continue to affect your wellbeing.

2. How is an EMDR Intensive different from weekly therapy? Weekly therapy can be highly effective, but some people find the stop-start nature of short sessions challenging, particularly when working through trauma. An EMDR Intensive provides extended, protected time for processing and integration, allowing you to stay engaged with the work without having to pause just as important material begins to emerge.

3. Who are EMDR Intensives suitable for? EMDR Intensives are often well suited to adults who: * Have experienced trauma or difficult life events * Struggle with anxiety, perfectionism or burnout * Feel stuck in longstanding patterns * Have limited availability for weekly therapy * Prefer a focused and structured approach to healing Many of the clients I work with are high-achieving and highly responsible individuals who are ready to prioritise their emotional wellbeing.

4. Can EMDR Intensives help with childhood trauma? Yes. EMDR is widely used to help people process childhood experiences that may continue to affect confidence, relationships, self-worth, anxiety levels or emotional wellbeing in adulthood. Many clients seek EMDR Intensives to address experiences that have been influencing them for years, even if they appear to be functioning well on the surface.

5. Can EMDR help with perfectionism and people-pleasing? Often, yes. Perfectionism, over-responsibility and people-pleasing can sometimes develop as ways of coping with earlier life experiences. EMDR can help process the underlying experiences that may continue to drive these patterns, reducing the pressure to constantly perform or meet others’ expectations.

6. Can EMDR Intensives help with burnout? If burnout is linked to chronic stress, anxiety, perfectionism or unresolved emotional experiences, an EMDR Intensive can help you understand and address the deeper factors contributing to your exhaustion. Many high-achieving adults find that working at this deeper level helps create more sustainable change than simply managing symptoms.

7. Are EMDR Intensives suitable for high-functioning professionals? Absolutely. Many professionals, business owners, healthcare workers, educators and other high-achieving adults choose EMDR Intensives because they offer a focused and efficient approach to therapy that can fit more easily around busy schedules.

8. Is online EMDR effective? Yes. Research and clinical experience suggest that EMDR can be highly effective when delivered online. Sessions are conducted using secure technology designed specifically for EMDR therapy, allowing you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home.

9. How do I know if I am ready for an EMDR Intensive? Readiness is not about being in crisis. In many cases, it is about recognising that there are experiences or patterns you would like to address and feeling motivated to engage in focused therapeutic work. We will explore this together during your assessment to ensure that an intensive is the right fit for your needs.

10. Will I feel overwhelmed during or after an EMDR Intensive? EMDR is carefully paced and tailored to each individual. Preparation is an important part of the process, and we will ensure that you have appropriate resources and strategies in place before beginning trauma processing. While the work can feel emotionally significant, the aim is not to overwhelm you but to help you process experiences safely and effectively.

11. How many EMDR Intensives will I need? This varies depending on your goals, history and the complexity of the issues you would like to address. Some people benefit from a single intensive focused on a specific experience, while others choose to undertake additional sessions as part of their wider therapeutic journey.

12. Do I need to have had therapy before an EMDR Intensive? No. Some clients have previous therapy experience, while others are seeking support for the first time. The assessment process helps determine whether an EMDR Intensive is likely to be appropriate and how best to tailor the work to your needs.

13. What happens after the EMDR Intensive? Following the intensive, we review your progress and discuss any recommendations for ongoing support. Some clients feel they have achieved their goals within the intensive format, while others choose to continue with further therapy to build on the progress they have made.

PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY FOR EMDR INTENSIVES EMDR intensives require a significant commitment of clinical time, preparation, and scheduling. As such, the following payment and cancellation terms apply: Payment Schedule A fee of £250 for the 1.5 hour assessment appointment is payable at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled assessment session. Following the assessment session, and if we agree to proceed with the intensive, the fee of £1000 for the three intensive 2.5 hour sessions is payable at least two weeks in advance of the first intensive session date. Intensive session dates will only be confirmed once this payment has been received. Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy Due to the nature of EMDR intensives and the difficulty in reallocating extended blocks of clinical time, a strict cancellation policy applies: Cancellations made with less than two weeks’ notice are non-refundable. Requests to reschedule sessions with less than two weeks’ notice may be considered at my discretion, but cannot be guaranteed. When booking an intensive, I reserve a dedicated block of time and pause my regular weekly clinic. This means that late cancellations often result in clinical time that cannot be reassigned. Fees therefore reflect not only the scheduled sessions, but also the preparation and the commitment of this protected time.
